Martinez Earns First Coaching Win as WPU Shuts Out Briar Cliff

Sioux City–Cem Olgar (Fr., Duesseldorf, Germany, Industrial Technology) scored for the second game in a row to start his college career and helped the Statesmen men’s soccer team in a 2-0 defeat of Briar Cliff in non-conference play Wednesday.

Francis Koroma (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn., General Accounting) actually accounted for the game-winner as he got the visitors on the board at the 11:37 mark. Koroma paced the offense with six shots, while William Penn (1-1) outshot the Chargers 17-8.

Olgar doubled the advantage in the 52nd minute and Pedro Pereira (Fr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Communications) made it stand by posting four saves for a shutout in his collegiate debut.

Angelo Kelly (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) continues to spread the wealth as he assisted on both goals for his second and third assist of 2013.

The decision was also the first collegiate coaching victory for Interim Head Coach Raphael Martinez.

“It was an extremely hot day, but the guys dealt with it well,” Martinez said. “We were able to set the tone early with the goal by Francis.”

“It was a great team effort; we deserved the win,” Martinez added. “The guys off the bench did their part and played an integral role in today’s win. Congrats to our back line and Pedro on earning a clean sheet. We were tidy on defense and did not give them many opportunities.”

“It feels great to win my first game as a collegiate coach and I hope there are many more to come this season,” Martinez said.

Next: William Penn travels to Ottawa, Kan. Saturday to face the Ottawa in a non-conference contest at 2 p.m.
