Martin Hogate, 94, of Pella, passed away Sunday morning, July 14, 2024, at the Pella Comfort House. Martin Powers Hogate was born May 4, 1930, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Ira Steward and Ruby Miller Hogate.
Martin was educated in Tracy, Iowa, and graduated in 1948. He then attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, and later William Penn College in Oskaloosa.
After his education, he began working for J.C. Penney for one year and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served from November 27, 1951, to August 14, 1953, and was Honorably discharged. He returned to J.C. Penney, where he had 40 years of employment from 1950 to 1990. He served as a manager in 1965 in Viroqua, Wisconsin; in 1972, he managed in Newton, Iowa; in 1977, he managed in Moline, Illinois, and then took the position at a new store in Moline, Illinois, in 1979. In 1982, he transferred to Norfolk, Nebraska and retired in 1990.
Martin married Diana “Dee” Lynn Parker on September 9, 2005, in Warsaw, Missouri, where they made their home. In 2017, they moved to Pella, Iowa.
He was a past director of The United Way, a member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club, American Legion, and a past member of the Elks Lodge. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Martin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling and never missed a Packers or Chiefs football game.
He is survived by his wife, Dee Hogate of Pella; his children: Betty Jean (Mike) Roeske of Sparta, Wisconsin, Charles Alan Hogate of Cashton, Wisconsin, and Linda Kay (Phil) Hogate Swenson of Madison, Wisconsin; five grandchildren: Nicole (Robert) Norton, Amy (Nick) McHugh, Ben (Jenna) Sullivan, Keegan Sullivan, and Mallory (Kevin) Betke; two great-granddaughters, Briell McHugh and Ada Sullivan, and two great-grandsons: Preston McHugh and Jetzyn Sullivan.
In addition to his parents, Martin was preceded in death by his wife of almost 34 years and mother of his four children, Darlene Voss; his son, Roger Lee Hogate; and a sister, Virginia Veldhuizen.
Funeral services for Martin will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 19, 2024, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Chad Lierman of Trinity Church officiating.
Burial will be in Bellefountain Cemetery near Tracy, with Military Honors by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard. The family will greet visitors from 10-11 a.m. on Friday.
