Mahaska County to view Growing Together webcasts

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will host three Growing Together webcasts this winter. The webcasts can be viewed at the ISU Extension and Outreach – Mahaska County office. The two-hour webcasts are free of charge and open to anyone who may be interested. Funding for the webcasts is provided by the USDA SNAP-Education program

The webcasts will provide ideas for Master Gardener volunteer projects and expand the knowledge base of volunteers. Master Gardeners will gain educational hours while learning about starting vegetable seeds and growing transplants, managing volunteers and building food security partnerships.

The webcast topics and the dates and times they will be viewed are:

February 26, Noon and 6:30 pm From Seed to Table, presented by Richard Jauron, horticulture specialist, and Caitlin Szymanski, local foods program coordinator, with ISU Extension and Outreach. Learn tips for starting vegetable seeds and growing transplants. Also get to know local food system resources in Iowa.
February 27, Noon and 6:30 pm Garden Helpers, presented by Aaron Steil, assistant director of Reiman Gardens, and Laura Irish, graduate research assistant in horticulture at Iowa State University. Explore best practices for managing volunteers from Reiman Gardens. Learn how Master Gardeners are volunteering as citizen scientists and contributing to research.
February 28, Noon and 6:30 pm Food Security Partners, presented by Tillie Good and Laura Liechty, youth and 4-H program specialists with ISU Extension and Outreach, and Carrie Chennault, graduate research assistant in agricultural education and studies at Iowa State. Hear how Master Gardeners are building projects that increase community food security. Also find out how to expand project partnerships with 4-H youth and volunteers.
