Mahaska County to use “flipped” classroom for Master Gardener Training this fall

Iowa State University Extension

Mahaska County Extension is now enrolling for a Master Gardener training to begin September 4, 2018. Enrollment is due August 24. Mahaska County will use a “flipped” classroom for their core training this fall.

In flipped classrooms, the recorded presentations by ISU professionals are viewed on your own outside of class. Class (face to face) sessions will be activities related to the topics of the recorded presentations. Class sessions on Tuesday evenings September 4-November 20; beginning at 6:30 pm (and will last 1-3 hours) most will held at Mahaska County Extension Office. Some classes will be field trips to various locations. Participants also attend hands on workshops at Iowa State University campus Saturday November 3.

This training has a $195 fee. The fee covers the resource guide, training manual, and costs for November 3 (workshops, lunch and snacks). A $25 late fee applies for those enrolling after September 7. Mahaska County Master Gardeners will cover $45 of the class fee for the first six to pay the class fee in Mahaska County in 2018.

Additionally, in exchange for training, participants are asked to volunteer 40 hours of service to their local extension program within the next year. Master Gardeners can answer requests for gardening information, staff plant clinics or displays, speak to local groups, teach youth, provide horticulture therapy activities for the elderly, and supervise or judge county fair Horticulture activities as judges or project coordinators.
