Lois Castner, 98, formerly of New Sharon, IA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Oskaloosa, IA, where she has been a resident for the last seven years.

Lois Eleanor Castner was born on October 22, 1918, at Union Township, in Poweshiek County, IA, to Elmer and Lelia (Faulkner) Enderson.

Lois graduated from New Sharon High School with the class of 1936. After completing normal training, Lois taught in country schools in Mahaska County.

On April 2, 1941, she was united in marriage to Donald Castner, at the United Methodist Church in New Sharon. The union was blessed with three daughters.

Lois was a full-time homemaker and excellent cook, and enjoyed gardening, especially tending her roses. Most Saturdays were spent baking cookies for her grandchildren. She was a member of the New Sharon United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Group. She was a founding member of the “Sew and So” Club.

Lois is survived by her daughters: Janne (& Thurman) Kitchin of Winter Park, FL, Carma (& Laurel) DeJong of New Sharon, IA and Beth (& Larry) Arendt of Clive, IA; seven grandchildren: Julie (& Jef) Futch of Winter Park, FL, John Kitchin of Winter Park, FL, Lynnae (& Dennis) Van Genderen of New Sharon, IA, Barry (& Deana) DeJong of New Sharon, IA, Cara Ferguson of New Sharon, IA, Blair (& Heather) DeJong of New Sharon, IA, and Jill Smith of Clive, IA; and fifteen great grandchildren.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents; and her brother and sister-in-law, Keith & Virginia Enderson.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at the New Sharon United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at the Friends Cemetery, in New Sharon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Sharon United Methodist Church or the New Sharon Fire and Rescue.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their kind care.
