Burlington–The preseason was longer than normal, but all the extra practice paid off for the William Penn men’s golf team as it began its campaign by winning the Southeastern CC Invitational Monday.

WPU was first out of 10 teams with a 293 at the par-72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course. Des Moines Area CC was a close runner-up at 295.

Although Des Moines Area CC did not take the team crown, the Bears did have the individual champion as Parker Davidson went into the red at two-under 70.

Two strokes behind Davidson in the 55-player field was Zachary Chegwidden (So., Essex, England, Business Management), who carded a 72 to place third.

Tying for fourth at 73 was the duo of Frederik Lundsgaard (Sr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) and Sebastian Rulis (Sr., Helsingor, Denmark, Business Management), while Zach Swink (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Sociology) was a high placer as well at 75.

Oscar Florez Martinez (Fr., Gignon, Spain, Business Management) rounded out the varsity lineup with a 90.

Jordan Albert (So., Sigourney, Iowa, Biology) and Cade Hartman (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management) headlined William Penn’s junior varsity team which placed eighth at 346. Both players shot an 81, while Peter Frederiksen (Sr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering) and Kaden Benson (Fr., Sigourney, Iowa, Business Management) each finished at 92.

“Our top four players are all off to a good start this season,” Head Coach Steve Tucker said. “We feel really good about the top of our lineup, but we are still looking for a solid #5 player. Everyone is working hard and I believe this is just the start of a really good year.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Galena, Ill. to compete in the Clarke Classic Friday and Saturday. Play will be contested at Eagle Ridge Golf Course.
