Letter To The Editor: In Regard To “Atheist Invocation”

To the Editor:

In regard to the Oskaloosa City Council allowing an “Atheist invocation” at the July 6, 2017 meeting, I am saddened that our city’s governing body will give a forum to such a counter culture belief requested by a non-resident of the city or county. I can only conclude that an approval of a request, which is a ridiculous oxymoron, was given out of fear of litigation.

With little investigation it is very apparent that this person is making the rounds in our state by addressing several other city councils and even the Iowa House of Representatives. His address to the Iowa House mocked Christianity by invoking “the Trinity of Science”.

The basic issue at hand is not a matter of validity in a belief in God or denying His existence. It is a matter of accepting the absurd out of fear. What’s next? Will we allow Wicca or Satanist invocations? I would rather see the Council end the tradition of any invocation at their meetings than to open the door to more such requests.

Allowance of this publicity stunt may be viewed as a betrayal of confidence by many of the Judeo-Christian residents of this area. As a Christian, I am keenly aware of the fate of one who denies God versus those who betray Him. I ask that the city management rethink their decision on this matter.
