Lester Mitchel, 70, of rural Oskaloosa died peacefully at his home on Friday, December 30, 2016. He was born October 2, 1946, in Mahaska County, the son of Walter and Dorothy Craig Mitchel.

Lester attended school in Mahaska County. Early on Lester delivered papers in Oskaloosa. He later worked at Tracks Oil. In 1974, he was united in marriage to Judy Moses in Missouri.

At the age of 18 he started driving truck. He drove for various companies in Oskaloosa. Lester retired from driving the block truck for Ideal Ready Mix in Oskaloosa in 2008.

Lester enjoyed stock car races, riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting, and camping. He delighted in having his family around especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lester’s family includes his wife of over 42 years, Judy Mitchel of rural Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband, Patty (& Scott) Hampton of Port Orchard, Washington; a son, Leslie Mitchel of Missouri; a step daughter and her husband, Mary (& Bill) Carman of rural Oskaloosa; a step son and his wife, John (& Teresa) Moses of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Horn of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother in infancy, Richard.

As was Lester’s wish his body has been cremated and no services are planned. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
