Leland Pettyjohn, 76, of Bussey passed away early Tuesday morning, April 4, 2017, at the West Ridge Specialty Care Center in Knoxville, Iowa. Leland D. Pettyjohn, son of Charles Arthur and Nora May (Mavin) Pettyjohn, was born, June 10, 1940, in Knoxville, Iowa.

Leland grew up in Marysville, Iowa where he attended school. As one of eight children, seven of them boys, there was never a shortage of playmates, they spent countless days swimming in creeks and exploring the countryside.

February 12, 1966, he married Diana Murle McNeal in Knoxville. They made their home in Knoxville, until moving to a farm near Leighton.

After his education, Leland worked as a welder for Massey-Ferguson Manufacturing for 18 years. In addition to his welding job, he also worked as a farm hand for Larry Ancell. After Massey-Ferguson had moved the plant to Canada, Leland worked full-time for Larry. He retired in 2005 when he moved into Bussey.

Leland was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed fishing and hunting, particularly mushrooms.

His family includes his children: Cindy Doud of Oskaloosa and Max Pettyjohn of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren; his step-children: Deborah Gray of Rochelle, Illinois, and Reney Fields of Houston, Texas; seven step-grandchildren; two brothers, Buck (& Cindy) Pettyjohn of Knoxville, and Joe (& Debra) Pettyjohn of Hamilton, IA; and a sister, Judy (& David) Sytsma of Hamilton, IA.

In addition to his parents, Leland was preceded in death by his wife, Diana of 39 years; a son-in-law, Tom Doud; and four brothers: Orville, Larry, Irvin, and Mitchell Pettyjohn.

As was his wish, Leland’s body has been cremated.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 15 at Marysville Cemetery.
Those attending the service should meet at the cemetery. Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
