Late Flurry Sinks Statesmen

Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s soccer team gave #25 Cardinal Stritch a battle for most of Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately faltered in the waning minutes and eventually fell 3-1 in non-conference action.
WPU (2-1), which dropped its first contest of the year, was outshot 19-9, but kept the Wolves (2-0-1) off the board through the first 45 minutes.
The visitors finally broke through in the 52nd minute, but Lily Ocampo (So., Muscatine, Iowa, Biology) evened things up again in the 70th minute by tapping home a pass from Ashley Broeker (Jr., Ankeny, Iowa, Exercise Science). The goal is Ocampo’s first of her collegiate career.
The score remained 1-1 entering the last five minutes of regulation, but CSU’s pressure was too much and the visitors slipped a pair of goals past goalkeeper Riley Ludwig (Jr., Big Bear City, Calif., Psychology) at the 85:11 and 86:23 marks. Ludwig tallied eight saves in the setback, while Raunice Butler (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas, Physical Education) and Justine Arguelles (Jr., Ventura, Calif., Biology) both managed two shots apiece.
“I thought we played very well until the last five minutes,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We stuck to the game plan and were in a good position with the game potentially going into overtime. Unfortunately, a few individual mistakes cost us at the end. The final score does not represent what our players did today.”
“We have plenty of positives to take from this game and we look forward to improving this week in practice,” Highcock added.
Next Up: William Penn takes a significant break, remaining in Oskaloosa on September 14 to host Iowa Wesleyan in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
