Lady Statesmen Fail in Upset Bid Against Coe

William Penn Women's Athletics

Cedar Rapids–The William Penn volleyball team was looking to upend the best NCAA Division III team in the state Thursday, but Coe was not too accommodating in dropping the navy and gold 3-1 in non-conference play.

William Penn (18-20) lost by scores of 25-23, 17-25, 17-25, 23-25. The visitors were outhit .242-.125. The Kohawks, who were 8-0 in the Iowa Conference this fall, are now 30-3 overall. They are receiving votes in the latest Division III poll.

Unfortunately, no Lady Statesmen player reached double figures as Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC) and Katie Rielly (Jr., Oskaloosa, Des Moines Area CC) led their team with nine winners each. Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) and Brittany Rohling (Sr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) added eight kills as well.

Dayna Sammons (Fr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Menomonee Falls HS) had 22 assists on the night, while Katherine Stumberg (Sr., Williamsburg, Kirkwood CC) contributed 18.

Defensively, Subbert led William Penn with 24 digs, while Alanna Connors (So., Libertyville, Ill., Libertyville HS) returned from injury to post 22. Rohling assisted on two blocks.

After barely getting over the .100 mark in only two of their first three sets, the Lady Statesmen hit .324 in the fourth in an attempt to knot up the match. To their chagrin, however, set #4 was also Coe’s best showing, owning a .359 mark to close it out.

Next: William Penn travels to Rock Island, Ill. Saturday to play their final non-conference contests of 2011. The Lady Statesmen first meet Wartburg at 1 p.m. and then face Dubuque at 3 p.m.
