Kate Shelley Train

Grab your kids or grandkids and join us on this one-day trip to the actual site of Kate Shelley’s heroic climb across a decrepit railroad trestle on Honey Creek near Moingona. Not only did Kate manage to save the lives of hundreds of train passengers by letting the station know the bridge was out, but she also put out the rescue call for two railroad workers who were stranded in the river.

We’ll leave Pella around 8:30 with pickups in the Des Moines and Ames areas. We’ll take a look at the Kate Shelley room at the Boone County Historical Society and then after lunch, head over to Moingona to the actual site of the depot and creek.

And since we’re in a “bridge” state of mind, we’ll stop on the way home at the Madrid High Trestle Bridge and take time to explore that, returning to Pella around 6 p.m. Transportation is by coach bus.

We won’t meet as a book club beforehand for this trip, but be sure to pick up Kate Shelley and theMidnight Express by Margaret Wetterer at Book Vault. The book is geared for grades 4-8, but it’s a great introduction to the story for all ages.

Contact Valerie Van Kooten at (641) 628-9789 or at vankootenv@central.edu soon to get a copy of the itinerary and registration form! Don’t wait too long!
