Karen M. “Cookie” Breuklander, 75, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, May 4, 2017, at MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born Monday, August 25, 1941, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Everett J. and Naomi G. Love Smith.

Karen graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the Class of 1959. On October 23, 1959, Karen was united in marriage to Glenn L. Breuklander in Oskaloosa. They were married 36 years until his death in 1996.

Early on, Karen stayed home to raise her family. She also worked cleaning houses, managed the lunch counter at Woolworth’s, and lastly, she worked in health and environmental services at Mahaska Hospital until her retirement in 1999.

Karen was an active member of the Hospital auxillary. She was also a member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.

Karen loved her family. She also enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for church functions, following the Decorah Eagles, staying current on social media, V.B.S. and other functions at Central Reformed Church.

Karen is survived by her daughter, Brenda (& Dan) Downey of Prairie City; her son, Glenn Jr. (& Kelli) Breuklander of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren: Madison Breuklander (& Chris Fee), Delaney, Maison and Mallery; a great grandson, Fitch Fee; three sisters: Marcia (& Larry) Worrall, Phyllis Carlson, and Janet (& Terry) Smith; a special friend, Pat Lowry; and her Maltese: Lily.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers: Don, Kenneth, Wendell and Warren Smith; and a sister, Peggy Jean Smith.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 8, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. at Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating.
A family prayer service will be at 10:15 A.M.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Sunday after 2 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present at the funeral chapel Sunday from 3 – 5 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Central Reformed Church.
