Josephine “Jo” Rainer, 89, of Oskaloosa passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Josephine Iris Rainer was born September 21, 1929, in Albia, Iowa to William and Irene (Dunsmoor) McCarty.

Jo was a 1947 graduate of Albia High School. June 2, 1948, she married Donald Leevan Rainer in Des Moines, Iowa. They first made their home in Edison NE, where Don was hired as a teacher. Over the following years, Don’s career took the family to several communities in Iowa and Minnesota.

Jo held several positions as secretary and office manager for businesses in the communities they resided, and after moving to Adel in 1973, she worked in that capacity for the First Presbyterian Church in Grimes. In 2012, Jo and Don moved to Oskaloosa to be closer to their children. Don died on June 4, 2016.

Jo enjoyed camping trips with the family when her children were young; she was always an avid reader, and in later years, enjoyed playing cards and BINGO with friends. Her family remembers her as a doting mother who was never shy about expressing her opinions. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa.

Her family includes her children: Deb Rainer of Denver, CO and Randall Rainer of University Park, IA; her grandchildren: Jessica Rainer of Des Moines IA and Michael Rainer of Mason City IA; great-grandchildren, William and Riley; and a sister, Jean Chaney of Kirksville, MO.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; two sisters, Imogene Barnhart and Geraldine Marlin; and a brother, Cloyd McCarty.

Funeral Services for Jo will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Craig Palmer of the First Presbyterian Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Adel. Langkamp Funeral Chapel and Crematory is handling the arrangements.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to service time on Tuesday morning.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice Serenity House c/o Mahaska Health Foundation.
