Joan Winn, 84, of Ollie, died Monday, March 4, 2019, in Fairfield, Iowa. She was born May 6, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York the daughter of Robert and Rosalie (Carr) Flynn.

Joan attended grade school in New York before attending Montessori school. She came to Iowa and was enrolled in the culinary classes at Iowa State University before attending the Nurses Training program at Indian Hills Community College.

On October 4, 1954, she was united in marriage to Norman Winn. To this union two daughters were born, Debra Ann and Denise Rosalie. They shared over 59 years of marriage together before Norman passed away in 2013.

Joan worked in retail in New York as well as several places in Iowa. She was a waitress at Dickey’s Prairie Home for 1 year before becoming a cook for Pekin Schools. She retired from Pekin in 1996.

Joan was on the Ollie City Council for 10 years and was the mayor of Ollie for 4 years. She was a member of the Ollie Baptist Church and the Legion Auxiliary post 504 for over 40 years.

Joan enjoyed traveling with Norman to go fishing in Canada and spent a lot of time fishing and staying in their cabin on the Skunk River. Her real joy in life was spending time with her family and friends.

Her family includes her two daughters, Debra Ann (& Dan) Acosta of Mesa, Arizona and Denise Rosalie (& Milo) Greiner of Keota; three grandchildren: Amy (& Chris) Wells of Iowa City, Beau (& Melanie) Sieren and Brandy (& Jeremy) Sieren; four great grandchildren: Davin, Mariah, Mason, and Max Sieren; and two great-great grandchildren, Haleigh and Lileigh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norman Winn; a son, Dennis James Winn; three sisters: Jean Ann Flynn (in infancy), Mildred Storm and Rose Mary Oster; and a brother, Robert Patrick Flynn.

As was Joan’s wish, her body has been cremated and no services are planned.
Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Ollie Cemetery at a later date. Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
