Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 87

Joan Macksey, 87, of Oskaloosa passed away early Sunday morning, June 29, 2014, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa after a brief illness. Joan, daughter of Francis Joseph and Eugenia Kathryn Lechty Boyle, was born, July 18, 1926, in Iowa City, Iowa.

Joan was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Iowa City, Iowa. She then attended Marycrest College in Davenport, where she studied journalism. While visiting her roommate, Rose (Sister Karen) Macksey’s home in Oskaloosa, she met her future husband, Earl Macksey. She married Earl Ellis Macksey, June 16, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. They made their home in Oskaloosa where Earl was a Postal Clerk.

Joan was a stay-at-home-mother and kept very busy with their six children, including two sets of twins. In her later years, Joan worked at Good Times Day Care and for the county auditor’s office as an Election Day judge at the polls.

She was a devout member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she enjoyed daily mass, taught C.C.D. classes, and was an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society for several years.

Joan had a very inquisitive mind which was evident from her choice of college majors; it was important to her to stay informed on many issues and impart this knowledge and information on to her children through conversation and letters. Reading, working crossword puzzles and word searches were things she enjoyed to the very end. Her keen devotion to social justice led her to join the Democratic Women’s Society where she was an active member for several years. She also enjoyed her large extended family and crocheting.

Joan’s family includes her husband, Earl of 67 years; her children: Jane Clark of Centerville, Ohio, Stephen Macksey of Chicago, IL, Maureen “Molly” (Greg) McCaulley of Oskaloosa, Anne (Michael) Reese of Wheaton, IL, David (Tina) Macksey of Chicago, IL and Daniel (Carla) Macksey of Rolling Meadows, IL; ten grandchildren; a sister: Barbara Feeney of Iowa City, IA, a brother: Stephen Boyle of Portland, OR and her sister-in-law and former roommate, Sister Karen Macksey of Davenport, IA.
