Jerry Ferguson

February 6, 1936 – March 14, 2011

Jerry Ferguson, 75 of New Sharon passed away Monday, March 14, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Friday, March 18, 2011 at the New Sharon United Methodist Church with Pastor John Battern officiating. Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the United Methodist Church with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to United Methodist Church or the North Mahaska High School.

Jerry Lee Ferguson, son of Bennie and Maxine (Dunwoody) Ferguson was born on February 6, 1936 in New Sharon, Iowa. He was a 1954 graduate of New Sharon High School. On May 31, 1958, Jerry was united in marriage to Gayle Fleming at the New Sharon United Methodist Church To this union four children were born, Brett, Kent, Ben and Mindy. Jerry was drafted in the United States Army in the fall of 1958 and was honorable discharged in July of 1960. Jerry farmed and raised cattle in the New Sharon area all his life. He also was a Pioneer Sales Representative for 18 years. Jerry was a dedicated father and grandfather, who absolutely loved to watch his children and grandchildren show cattle and hogs. Jerry bred and sold show cattle dealing with many friends throughout the Midwest. He was a former director of the Southern Iowa Fair Board, a former board member of the Taintor COOP, a member of the New Sharon Flyer’s Club, President of the Union Mills Cemetery Board and a member of New Sharon United Methodist Church. Jerry enjoyed attending the Iowa State Fair, the Southern Iowa Fair, raising cattle, the outdoors and above all his family.

His memory will be cherished by his wife of 52 years, Gayle Ferguson of New Sharon; his mother, Maxine Ferguson of New Sharon; four children, Brett (Carrie) Ferguson of New Sharon, Kent (Renee) Ferguson of New Sharon, Ben (Cara) Ferguson of New Sharon and Mindy (Bruce) Tokle of Grinnell; thirteen grandchildren, Logan Ferguson, Joslin Ferguson, Alexandra Ferguson, Gabriella Ferguson, Nolan Ferguson, Hannah Ferguson, Maggie Ferguson, Jordan Ferguson, Bailey Ferguson, Colby Ferguson, Katie Tokle, Marisa Tokle and Tanner Tokle; one sister, Janet (Roger) Holm of Clearwater, Minnesota; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law and numerous nieces & nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Bennie Ferguson.
