Jean Steffy

Green Valley, Arizona. Jean Steffy, daughter of Oscar A. and Lula Marsh Royer was born April 4, 1924 in Cherokee, Iowa. She died October 28, 2010 in Green Valley, Arizona at the age of 86.

She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1942. She received her BA degree from Iowa State Teachers College with a double major in Physical Education and Instrumental Music.

Jean taught in Emmetsburg, Iowa and at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. She received her Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa and taught one year at Minnesota State College in Saint Cloud. After her marriage she taught band and physical education in Montezuma, Iowa. She finished her teaching career in Pella, Iowa where she taught physical education and coached tennis and basketball.

Jean was united in marriage to Keith Steffy on June 3, 1951. They established their home in Montezuma, Iowa where they raised their children Daniel Craig Steffy of Green Valley and Nancy Jean Steffy of Florence, Colorado.

In Green Valley, Jean was a member of the Green Valley and Tucson concert bands, the Chamber Music Society, several recorder groups and the Green Valley Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, her sister Dorothy Jung and her parents.

Jean is survived by her dedicated husband Keith of 59 years, her children Dan and Nancy, her sister Ruth Colbie (Carl) of Chico, California, her brother Don Royer (Dorothy) of Cherokee, Iowa and many loving relatives and friends.

A musical memorial will be celebrated at the Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley, Arizona on Saturday, November 6, at 2:00 pm and a Open House will be held at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma from 2:00 to 3:30 on December 4, 2010.

Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
