James “Jim” Hargis, 69 of New Sharon went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday morning, November 11, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. James Andrew Hargis, the son of Caleb and Helen (McMains) Hargis, was born on April 19, 1949 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Jim graduated from North Mahaska High School in 1967 and attended the University of Iowa before he was drafted by the United States Air Force in 1971.

After Jim was honorably discharged, he returned to New Sharon where he farmed with his father in the Mormon Point area near Union Mills.

On February 22, 1975, Jim was united in marriage to the love-of-his-life, Nancy Johnson in the Union Mills Christian Church. To this union two children were born, Andrew and Jessica.

Jim and Nancy owned the Dairy Creme in New Sharon from 1976 to 1983, while continuing to farm with his father. In 1994, Jim started his own construction business, JH Builders, having the privilege to work with his children, Andy and Jessica. Jim worked beside his son and daughter for several years before retiring in 2017 due to health reasons.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family, especially attending his granddaughters ballgames. He was a faithful member of the Union Mills Christian Church where he shared his love for Jesus Christ. Jim was very active in the church serving as an Elder and Board Member. He was also a member of the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post #446.

His legacy will be honored by his wife of 43 years, Nancy Hargis of New Sharon; his children: Andrew (& Melanie) Hargis of New Sharon and Jessica (& Jaroed) Sanders of Montezuma; five grandchildren: Layla Hargis, Peyton Sanders, Libby Hargis, Paige Sanders and Lennon Hargis; his mother, Helen Hargis of New Sharon; three siblings: Elaine (& Merrit “Chuck”) Johnston of Goshen, NY, Melanie (& Joe) Blunk of Fremont and C.E. (& Debbie) Hargis of New Sharon; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, Caleb Hargis.

Funeral service will begin at 1:30 pm Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the New Sharon First Christian Church.
Burial will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the Union Mills Christian Church at Union Mills with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Union Mills Christian Church or Ralphi’s Love Train, that will be used for local families in need during Christmas time.
