Isiminger advances to semifinals of league tennis tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS — Junior William Isiminger (North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) headlines three Central College men’s tennis players who won enough matches on the first day of the American Rivers Conference individual tournament on Friday to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

In the A-Flight, Isiminger won a pair of a matches to get to the semifinals. He beat Spencer Anderson of Nebraska Wesleyan University 6-3, 6-1 in the first round. He took down his quarterfinal opponent, Brook Norwood of Luther College, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.

“He was a man on a mission,” coach Ryun Ferrell said. “He was not going to be denied today.”

Tanner Finken (sophomore, Carroll, Kuemper Catholic) went 2-0 in the B-Flight of singles, first knocking off Nebraska Wesleyan’s Bobby Curry 6-3, 6-4 and then Coe College’s Jordan Oaks 6-2, 5-7, 10-5 to make the semifinals.

“He had to a beat a higher seed to get to the semifnals,” Ferrell said. “He probably didn’t play his best tennis but he knows what to do and got it figured out.”

Making his Central debut, freshman Trey Melvin (Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) rattled off a 3-0 record. He opened with an 8-3 over Luther’s Connor Fuzzey followed by an 8-2 victory against Aaron Mumm of Buena Vista University. He capped his day with a 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal victory against Ethan Humble of Simpson College.

“Trey played tough and he played great,” Ferrell said. “He did a really nice job. We’re real excited to see what he can do tomorrow.”

The second day of competition from Cedar Rapids starts at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
