Iona was born on October 25, 1922 on the family farm near Montezuma, Iowa to Cecil and LaVina Shook Miller. She was raised near Montezuma and she graduated from Searsboro High School in 1942.
She was united in marriage to Lyle “Mike” Hudnutt on May 31, 1943 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Lyle was an active service member of the United States Army Air Corp. during World War II and the couple lived in several locations. Following his service, the couple returned to Iowa and they lived in Grinnell all of their lives. She was employed as a receptionist and labor reporter at Farm Hand in Grinnell for twenty-one years, retiring on August 31, 1991.
Iona was a member of the West Liberty Church of Christ, the Grinnell Christian Church, Lady Elks, Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary, and the Oakland Acres ladies league. She dearly loved her family and she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting and school events. She was an excellent cook who prepared countless Sunday meals for her family, her specialty being fried chicken with potato salad with a dash of TLC. Her enjoyments included golfing, watching football, especially the Green Bay Packers, and tending to her flowers and garden. She will be remembered for her loving smile and her good spirit.
Iona is survived by her children, Judy Haslow of Escanaba, Michigan, Michael Hudnutt of Grinnell, and Randy Hudnutt of Studio City, California; her foster sons, Denny and Fred Rook; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and her siblings, Cletus Miller of Montezuma and Lois Douglass of Montezuma. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle “Mike” Hudnutt on April 15, 1992; her brothers, Forrest, Calvin, and Marion Miller; and her sister, Virginia Miller, who died in infancy.
