Oskaloosa, Iowa – Temperatures were comfortable for an end of summer scrimmage, and the action on the field indicated that the fall could be hot for the Indians.

The format was different than past years for the ‘Old Shoe Game’, when Centerville came to town for the preseason scrimmage.

Oskaloosa Head Football Coach Jake Jenkins talked about seeing his team in action for the first time on Friday night.

Jenkins said that after watching the scrimmage he will be heading to the screening room to review film. This will help him decide where players will start the 2017 season against Pella on Friday night. “One of the most difficult things in coaching is deciding who plays. This scrimmage is excellent for that. We get to see them [players] under the Friday night lights.”

The scrimmage “was great for us. It’s great for Centerville,” added Jenkins. “It’s going to help us to decide who we are going to start with next week.”

The Indian offense had some promising plays, but the lack of repetitions was evident during a few miscues, including a missed snap.

Jenkins said that the scrimmage was as much like a game week as you can possibly get. “Your biggest improvement is always week one to week two.”

“I told the guys we made a million and a half mistakes, and if we can fix half of those, we’ll be on our way,” said Jenkins. “We’ve got to fix as many mistakes as we possibly can, because we did make a lot.”

Taking away some positives from the evening, Jenkins said he was excited with defense and their ability to “adjust on the fly” to what the offense is doing.

The Indians will open up the season against the three time defending state champions Pella on Friday night at the Lacey Complex Stadium. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
