Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians hosted their first ever home swim meet on Thursday evening at the Mahaska County YMCA.

Janet Reese is one of the coaches for the team. Reese said they were excited to host the inaugural meet for many reasons, including the recognition of the team seniors. Having a hometown crowd cheering them on was also a big reason to host the triple dual meet.

Reese said that the Indians girls swimmers were putting up some personal records, “which is always our goal every meet.”

“We’re a tiny team, so we struggle in the points against some of those other teams,” added Reese. “We strive for individual records.”

Head Coach Laura Brummel said, “Our swim girls turned their nerves and excitement for our first HOME meet into positive fast charging energy in the water last night! We appreciated all of the community supporters who stepped in to be timers, hy-tek workers, “gatekeepers”, and all of the other fine details that go into prepping for a meet, along with being encouraging faces in the stands! The team swam hard, but lost against Vinton-Shellsburg and came out with a win over Williamsburg, with the final score results of Vinton-Shellsburg 61 Vs. Oskaloosa 31 AND Oskaloosa 49 Vs. Williamsburg 42

“The event went smoothly, and the Indians were energized by the home crowd,” added Reese.

Competition swimming needs a slightly cooler water temperature, and the pool temperature was lowered to 79.6 degrees for the meet. A process that took several days to accomplish. After the meet was completed, the heating process began to bring the water temperature back up to 85 degrees.
