Indians Earn First Win Of The Season

by Coach Jodi Steinlage

The Oskaloosa Indians were back in action last night against the Ottumwa Bulldogs. The girls would come out and dominate large parts of the first half and would get the first goal on the season in the 12th minute off Senior, Aleeya Cheney, with an assist from Senior, Kaia Graham. The girls would continue to press the Bulldog defense but would find the back of the net until right before halftime. The goal would again come from Cheney with an assist from Freshman, Emma Castilo-Basham. The Indians would take a 2-0 lead into half time.

The 2nd half saw much of the same, but this time with the Indians going into a very stiff headwind. Sophomore, Lindy Slocum, would find the back of the net in the 60th minute with an assist from Sophomore, Abby Lumsden. Ottumwa would get a shot off just a few minutes later that would bring the score to 3-1. After the goal, the Indians settled down and continued to push and keep the Bulldogs at bay. The final score would be 3-1 moving Oskaloosa’s record to 1-1 on the season.

” We are still trying to see where all the pieces fit as a team, but we are seeing a lot of progress with the girls and what they are doing. We need to put an entire game together, but overall we were really pleased with how the whole team, but especially the defense were able to keep a few of their threats in check for large parts of the game.

The Indians would have 17 shots in the game with 8 of them being on goal. Cheney would lead the team with 7 shots (3 on goal) and 2 goals. Kyrsten DeWees would have 4 saves in the game while giving up 1 goal. The Indians have a quick turn around as we play tonight at Knoxville in a Varsity only game at 5:30.

Stats:

Aleeya Cheney: 7 shots (3 on goal); 2 goals

Lindy Slocum: 2 shots (1 on goal); 1 goal
Emma Castilo-Basham: 1 assist
Emily Richmond: 1 shot (1 on goal)
