Indians Defeat Centerville

by Jodi Steinlage

Led by a pair of goals from Emma Castill-Basham, the Oskaloosa Girls’ Soccer team defeated Centerville 5-0 Thursday.

On a blustery evening, the Indians were not as successful as they would have liked with the wind to their back. After several chances came up empty, Oskaloosa finally got on the board in the 13th minute when Mary Nelson finished off a beautiful cross from Aleeya Cheney.

Cheney then assisted once again, less than eight minutes later as she slipped a pass off to the side to an open Lindy Slocum, who buried the shot for a 2-0 lead. The Indians would hold that 2-0 advantage into halftime.

Despite not having the wind as an ally, Oskaloosa played considerably better, recording a trio of goals after intermission.

Castill-Basham put the first of the three tallies in the back of the net at the 54:50 mark, off a pass from Slocum. Cheney then got into the goals column in the 62nd minute as she put away a long pass from Brooke Englehardt.

Castill-Basham completed the scoring in the 77th minute with the assist given to Nelson.

The Indians recorded 31 shots with 17 of them being placed on goal. Kyrsten DeWees had a quiet night between the pipes, managing just one save.

Oskaloosa, which is now 3-2, will on the road next time out, traveling to Norwalk to take on the Warriors at 5:30 p.m.
