Oskaloosa, Iowa – Helping families have a house to call home is the mission of the Mahaska County Habitat for Humanity.

Oskaloosa Hy-Vee stepped up and provided a Gourmet Drive-Thru on Tuesday evening to help support that cause.

The meal included a tomahawk chop, pork and beans, baked potato, broccoli salad and a roll for $15.00.

Christian Ray is a board member of Mahaska County Habitat for Humanity and he spoke with Oskaloosa News about the drive-thru. Ray explained that a portion of the proceeds going to Habitat to help with local builds in Oskaloosa.

The two homes in Oskaloosa were slowed because a title search indicated there were some encumbrances on the title that nobody knew about. “So we had to legally have those cleaned up. That was kind of why it stalled just temporarily, but everything is clear and fine, and we’re good to go,” explained Ray.

Ray says Habitat hopes to have the homes wrapped up by this fall.

Beyond the two homes in Oskaloosa, another home is being rehabilitated in New Sharon. “We’re nearing completion on that,” Ray said.

Ray shared that Habitat for Humanity is not a give me program. The new owners “are actually buying the house,” and will have a mortgage, while helping to increase the value of neighborhoods, and puts more homes on the tax rolls. “So it’s a win for everybody, and tax dollars are paid every year.”
