Huskies Hold Off Indians At Home
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Lacey Stadium is now in its fifth season of football action, and the new press box with executive suites are but the latest amenities to be added to the ever evolving complex.
The rain and lightning welcomed the Huskies and Indians to the season opener, causing a half-hour delay to the season.
A young Oskaloosa team was set to square off against a more veteran Winterset team.
Last year, the Huskies edged out a victory over Oskaloosa by a single point, and the Indians hoped that the home field advantage would be the factor on Friday night.
Oskaloosa Head Coach Mike Sterner said that the lesson learned from the evening was to take better care of the football. “When you give up the football more times than the other team, that’s usually a bad thing and that really haunted us a lot tonight.”
Sterner said that Winterset played very well and “they played for four quarters.”
With mother nature not playing nice either, Sterner said they tried to limit the ball handling, and said how it was exciting to see how some of the new offense is starting to develop for the team. “Some new looks just opened up for us. We just couldn’t be consistent enough yet to make those first downs and to make those touchdowns.”
“Our kids never quit,” added Sterner, “They never will.”
In the coming week, Sterner hopes to see some growth in the team as they prepare to take on the Ottumwa Bulldogs in Ottumwa on Friday night.
