Hood, Newby Honored as February Players of the Month

Oskaloosa–The William Penn University Athletics Booster Club has announced the recipients of the February Player of the Month awards.

Senior men’s basketball player Dexter Hood (Tuscaloosa, Ala., Wellness and Recreation) earned the Male award, while freshman women’s track and field athlete Shaniah Newby (Twentynine Palms, Calif.) claimed the Female honor. The laurel is the first for both student-athletes.

In nine games, Hood averaged 23.2 points and 7.6 rebounds, while also tallying 18 assists and nine steals. The senior shot 57.5% from the field (40.8% 3-PT) and 68.3% from the free-throw line. He reached double figures in all nine of his games, including surpassing the 20-point mark seven times. Hood scored a month-high 30 points versus Baker on February 22 and paced the Statesmen to a perfect 9-0 record during February.

In four meets (four events), Newby twice placed in the top five. She tallied best times of 7.90 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 1:00.70 in the 400-meter dash. Newby also helped the 4×400-meter relay team to a fifth-place finish at the conference meet. The freshman managed her best performance in the 200-meter dash, however, breaking the school record with a time of 25.79 seconds.
