Hood, Blaylock Power Statesmen Past Graceland

Lamoni, Iowa—On the backs on a couple of huge performances, the Statesmen got back in the win column following just their second loss of the season, with a big road win over Graceland.

William Penn (18-2, 12-2 Heart) came out of the gate red-hot, outscoring Graceland (7-14, 4-11 Heart) 15-0 to begin the ballgame. It took them just a little under three minutes to score their 15th point, a breakaway bucket by Dexter Hood (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.). The Statesmen never looked back as they led from buzzer-to-buzzer en route to a 106-92 victory.

The navy and gold shot a robust 56% from the field, including 34% from long range while Graceland shot 38% from the field and 34% from beyond the arc.

The biggest lead of the night for the Statesmen came at the end of the first half as Hood drained a with 2 minutes to go to increase the lead to 29, 60-31. It was Hoods night as he tied his season-high in points scored with 37 on 11-14 shooting, including hitting four of six from beyond the three-point line. Hood also grabbed eight boards.

Hood was not alone however, Kevion Blaylock (Jr., Houston, Texas, Information Technology) produced his third consecutive double-double, tallying 26 points 12 boards, and five assists. Blaylock was 11-13 from the field and 2-3 from deep. Eddie Daley (Jr., DeWitt, Michigan, Business Management) played some vital minutes off the bench as he poured in 14 points in a little over 15 minutes of action. Karmari Newman (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) rounde out the double-digit scorers as he helped out with 11.

Chanze Cruesoe (Fr., St. Louis, Missouri, Business Management) led the facilitating duties as he had nine helpers.

Despite barely edging out the Yellowjackets In bench scoring (26-23), The Statesmen dominated the points in the paint (38-28) and dominated the boards, gaining a 48-37 edge.

“We played great in the first half, good in the second half.” Head Coach John Henry said, “Dexter and KB (Kevion Blaylock) were beast tonight.”
