Helen D. McMahan, 87 of Montezuma, Iowa passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Helen D. McMahan was born on April 13, 1927 in Barnes City, Iowa to John and Jennie Burggraaf McMahan.

Helen was the only one of eight siblings to be born in Poweshiek County, of which she was proud of. Helen attended and graduated from Barnes City High School in 1944 and attended Central College in Pella for a short time.

Helen worked for a short time at the Mahaska County Hospital in the Dietary Department. She then began her lifelong job with the Poweshiek County Sherriff’s Department as an office deputy. She retired after 37 years.

Helen was an avid Hawkeye fan and a Montezuma fan of all sports. She loved her family and became the official organizer of family events.

Helen served on the absentee election board for many years and was also a member of the Community Life Church in Barnes City. Helen was very strong in her faith, independent and strong willed. She made an extraordinary effort in keeping her large family close and involved.

She is survived by her sister, Hazel Palmer of Pleasant Hill, Iowa; her sister-in-laws: Imogene McMahan of Marion, Iowa and Verla McMahan of Roberta, Georgia; eighteen nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: Gerald (& Jessie) McMahan, Donald (& Valena) McMahan, Hassal McMahan, and Adrian McMahan; her sisters: Doris (& Vern) Cheney, and Dorothy (& Virgil) Lester; her brother-in-law, Darwin Palmer; and eleven nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma at 10:30 a.m.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 3, beginning at noon with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
Burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Community Life Center in Barnes City.
