Harry LeeRoy DeWitt, 55, of Oskaloosa died Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born October 2, 1963, in Oskaloosa, the son of Harry and Ann Nicholson DeWitt, Sr.

Harry attended school in Oskaloosa and was active in football and weightlifting. Harry graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1982.

Following high school, Harry joined his father in the family business, DeWitt and Son Welding. Harry later went to work as a welder at Vermeer in Pella for 14 years. In 2004, he started DeWitt Welding in Oskaloosa. He traveled all over the Midwest welding on various projects. He worked on jobs at Hilton Coliseum and the walk bridge across the Des Moines River by Wells Fargo Arena to name a few. He was a talented welder and never had trouble gaining certification for difficult projects.

Harry was united in marriage to Judy Kieffer at Lake Keomah State Park. To this union three children were born, Jeremiah, Amelia, and Josh. Harry and Judy later divorced.

Harry was a member of the Isaac Walton League in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed shooting sports, fishing, hunting, camping, mushroom hunting, and riding 4-wheelers and dirt bikes. He had a lifelong love of motorcycles. He did not care if it was a bike ride around town or a trip out to Sturgis, if it involved a motorcycle, he was game. He was a great friend and always willing to lend a helping hand.

His family includes his three children: Jeremiah DeWitt of Taintor, Amelia (& Knicolas) Chamberlain of Tracy, and Josh (& Kiersten) DeWitt of Kandiyohi, Minnesota; a grandson, Zakaius DeWitt; a grandchild to be born in August; two sisters: Charlene (& Kelly) Forbes of Crowley, Texas and Sue (& Dennis) Goodman of Oskaloosa; his “adopted son”, Jason Hicks of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents.

As was Harry’s wish, his body has been cremated.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
Private family graveside service and burial will be held at the Henness Cemetery at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the family and will be used to purchase a headstone for Harry.
