Oskaloosa, Iowa – Halloween is one holiday that continues to grow in popularity, and the ways people enjoy it continues to grow as well.

The Oskaloosa Evangelical Church held its first ever Kids Fall Festival on Saturday from 1pm to 3pm.

The group had some good success attracting a crowd to this year’s event, from some well placed flyers and community event calendars.

“It was a good turnout but very manageable,” says Crystal Phillips, who helped to coordinate the games and event for the church.

Out back of the church, the big boys could be found putting the final touches to their latest project. A paintball course had been built with donations from local businesses, individuals and a fundraiser.

Anthony Wiggins, who helped bring the course to life, said that along with himself, three of his friend have enjoyed paintball since high school. At church, Wiggins thought, “what better way to get young men involved with the church than to offer them something not typically found at a church.”

The group raised the money needed to buy safety nets that protect stray paintballs from hitting spectators, and they were more than happy to put it all to use for the first time on Saturday.

Sunday, the Central United Methodist Church held their second annual, “Trunk or Treat”. The trunks of participants cars were decorated and trick or treaters’ made their way from trunk to trunk, collecting their spoils.

The church youth group ‘Epic’ provided carnival games and everyone was welcome to enjoy a hot dog, dessert and a beverage.

Candace Slobe, who helps organize the event, said that turnout had been nearly ten times what it had been the previous year and they were very pleased with the response from the community.

Here are a few more events yet to go this week for Halloween.

  2. Mahaska Drug is also holding its ever popular event Wednesday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
