Grinnell men’s golf team has top GPA among NCAA D-III schools

GRINNELL – The Grinnell College men’s golf team received the ultimate academic honor from the Golf Coaches Association of America recently, as coach Brian Jaworski’s squad has been named the 2011 Academic National Champion for all of NCAA Division III.
The Academic National Champion honor is awarded to the squad with the highest grade point average in its respective division. Other champions were DePaul (Division I), Lynn (Division II), SCAD-Savannah (NAIA), USC-Lancaster (NJCAA DI) and South Mountain CC (NJCAA DII).
A total of 103 teams in all divisions submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher and earned All-Academic Team recognition. The Pioneers topped the list of 22 teams recognized in NCAA Division III with a GPA of 3.40.
To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors, a college or university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
“With the recent news that our No. 1 golfer, Peter Marsho ‘12, being named Academic All-American and now our entire team being crowned 2011 Division III Academic National Champions, our season is fulfilled,” said Jaworski. “We are National Champions and no one can ever take that away from this special group of men.
“At the risk of sounding overly confident, this is the standard that our guys expect of themselves and each other,” he added. “Our leaders the past five years (R.J. Roewe ‘09, Joe Fox ‘08, Pete Kieselbach ’10 and Trek Langenhan ‘07) openly talked about our mission to be the best both on and off the course. This year’s leaders Alex McDonald ‘11, Kale Knisley ’11 and Peter Marsho specifically set the Academic National Championship as one of our team’s goals. To see all of them (and our entire team) recognized for their leadership and hard work means the world to us. They all can share this wonderful achievement. Grinnell Men’s Golf Team – Academic National Champion sounds perfect to me.”
