Greetings from Under the Golden Dome

Iowa State Senator Tim Kapucian

Iowa State Senator Tim Kapucian

The end of April nears and the corn planters are greased and ready to go. A little too wet, but no complaints after last year. Who would have thought?

We are all optimistic that the end of session is near. As we wind down session, I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of you who have provided input, either by email, phone, or personal contact. My job is to represent you, and having your feedback helps me do a better job of accurately serving your interests.

This time of year, amendments to bills come rapidly. We rely not only on each other, but on a dedicated staff to ensure all issues are properly vetted. This being the case, I also want to publicly thank our staff here at the Capitol for their dedicated service to the State of Iowa. Without their expertise, the state would be at a significant disadvantage.

Before adjourning for the year, we need to come to agreement on the major reform packages presented this year, including education and property taxes. We also need to settle the state budget issues before leaving.

As I reflect back on this year’s session, I’m reminded of years ago when I farmed with my dad. We would be in the middle of field work experiencing a mechanical breakdown and as I’d leave for parts. Dad’s saying was, “Take your time getting there, but hurry home.” I think that pretty well describes how the legislature works. We seem to take 90 days to get here, but we want to hurry home in 10.

See you out and about the district.
