Governor Culver Appoints Stoebe as District Court Judge

DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver appointed Kurt Stoebe as a judge for Iowa’s 2B Judicial District on Friday, Dec. 31.

“It is an honor to appoint Kurt Stoebe as an Iowa District Court Judge,” Governor Culver said. “Kurt has an outstanding background of service to Iowans, and I thank him for continuing his commitment to justice through service on the Bench.”

Kurt Stoebe is currently serving as an Associate District Judge in Iowa’s Second Judicial District. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota in 1977. In 1980, he received his law degree, with honors, from the University of Iowa College of Law. During law school, Stoebe clerked for the U.S. Department of Justice. Following law school, he served as a clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit, until 1982. At that time, he joined the Stoebe Law Office in Humboldt, where he practiced until his selection as District Associate Judge. During this time he also served as Assistant City Attorney for Humboldt (1982-1997), City Attorney for Livermore, Iowa (1982-2006), City Attorney for Lu Verne, Iowa (1984-2006), Humboldt County Attorney (1985-1999), Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at Iowa Central Community College (2000-2001), and Humboldt County Magistrate (2001-2006). In 2006, he was named a District Associate Judge for Iowa’s Second Judicial District, where he currently serves. In 2010, Stoebe was elected president of the Iowa Judges Association.

The vacancy was created when District Judge William Pattinson retired after 16 years of service. The 2B Judicial District encompasses Pocahontas, Calhoun, Greene, Humboldt, Webster, Wright, Hamilton, Boone, Story, Marshall and Hardin counties.
