Gov. Terry Branstad orders flags to fly at half-staff Tuesday, March 15, 2011 in remembrance of last known American Veteran of World War I

(DES MOINES) –  Gov. Terry E. Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, from 8 a.m. until sunset in honor of Army Corporal Frank W. Buckles, the last known surviving American veteran of World War I, and in remembrance of all American veterans of World War I.

Born in Missouri, Buckles died on February 28, 2011 in West Virginia at the age of 110. He was one of three known WWI veterans still alive, and the only American.

On February 28, 2011, President Obama ordered all flags of the United States be flown at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on the day of interment.

The governor’s directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under control of the State of Iowa.

Flags will be at half-staff on the state Capitol building and on flag displays in the Capitol complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government sub divisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.

Mr. Buckles will be laid to rest tomorrow, Tuesday March 15, 2011.
