Girls Varsity Earn Second Straight Win At Norwalk

Oskaloosa Indians

by Jamie Brockman

The Oskaloosa girls built off the momentum from their first win in 47 games on Saturday to win their second straight game at Norwalk in overtime 41-36 Tuesday night. Osky came out with a lot of energy both offensively and defensively with a noticeable improvement on both ends of the floor racing out to a 9-0 lead after one quarter of play. The second quarter was a flip-flop however as Norwalk scored six while holding Osky scoreless until the final seconds of the quarter when Marleigh Denberger drained a three-pointer to give the Indians a 12-6 halftime lead.

Norwalk clawed back in the game pulling within two at 19-17 after three quarters; then sophomore Amanda Fay took over pouring in 12 points all in the second half. Norwalk didn’t go away however holding a four-point lead late in the game before Osky came back with tough defense and strong free throw shooting, including two late clutch free throws by Lindsay Holmberg, to tie it 29-29 at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, Osky outscored Norwalk 12-7, again hitting critical free throws to secure the 41-36 overtime win.

This marks Oskaloosa’s first Little Hawkeye Conference win since February 9, 2016, when ironically, they won at Norwalk 53-51

Oskaloosa was red hot at the free throw line as Lindsay Holmberg, Emma Kelderman, Kaylee Johnson, Fay, Denberger and Ashley Drost combined to connect on 20 free throws for the game.

Following the win, Oskaloosa Head Coach Jacee White said it was great to see the girls confidence in every aspect of the game, including defensively and the ability to step up to the free throw line with the game on the line and connect. White went on to say they’ve been telling the girls all along that they believe in them and that they can win games, but Saturday’s win seemed to turn the corner, and it’s another story once the girls see and experience it themselves. White was also very impressed with the play of Fay saying she’s been waiting for Amanda to step up and take over a game and tonight she did that. Fay led Osky with 12 points, Holmberg, Emma Kelderman, Denberger and Johnson each finished with six while Ashley Drost added four. Oskaloosa improves to 2-7 on the season and 1-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference and will look to keep the success rolling when Pella comes to Oskaloosa Friday night also riding the momentum. The Lady Dutch are 5-3 and 3-1 in the LHC coming off a 61-31 win over Newton, who beat Osky 49-34 last week, Pella also handled Norwalk 52-20, and Fairfield 54-36 (Fairfield 60-Osky 39). Game time is 6:15 pm Friday at Oskaloosa. Osky News Live powered by Thunder Country KIIC coverage with Jamie Brockman and Bret Doud starts with pregame at 6 pm
