Gary Michael Brunt, age 73, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Eddyville, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, October 29, 2016, at the Knoxville Hospital & Clinics in Knoxville. Gary was born on June 7, 1943, at the Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa to Keith and Mildred (Kerr) Brunt.

Gary was raised on a farm west of Eddyville in Mahaska County where he attended Blaine and later Star Country School. Gary attended and graduated from the Eddyville High School, Class of 1961. After high school Gary moved to Kansas City and attended auto parts school.

After his auto parts school Gary spent six years working at Harry Sheets Meat locker, then Chamberlain Manufacturing, and Ideal Supply Delivery.

In 1967 Gary entered the United States Navy and served for four years on the U.S.S. Tolovana during the Vietnam Era and was stationed in Long Beach, California.

After his service Gary managed Fitch’s/Autowise, worked for J.P. Summers, and the V. A. Hospital in Knoxville, retiring in 2005.

Gary was active all his life. In school he was involved with 4H. He rode motorcycles and golfed. He enjoyed drag racing and watching NASCAR Racing. One of Gary’s biggest passions in life was singing. He began singing in high school with a gospel quartet and throughout his life Gary sang and played guitar in bands.

Gary is survived by his son, Jeremy (& Nicole) Brunt of Oskaloosa; his two granddaughters, Madeline and Greta Brunt; three sisters: Mary Beth (& Charles) Tyrrel of New Sharon, Becky (& Rex) Picken of Independence, Missouri and Melinda Dexter of Eddyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents Keith & Mildred Brunt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel.
Visitation for Gary will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Gary’s family will be greeting friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday evening.
Burial will follow services at Highland Cemetery in Eddyville.
A memorial has been established in Gary’s name to the Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
The Eddyville Funeral Chapel is assisting Gary’s family with services.
