Four Compete in Last Chance Meets

Seward, Neb./Naperville, Ill.–In their final opportunities to qualify for nationals, four Statesmen track and field athletes came up shy of their goal as William Penn competed in last chance meets on Thursday and Friday.
Cornelius McCastle (Fr., McKinney, Texas, Industrial Technology) had the best showing as a trio of men were in action at the Concordia (Neb.) Twilight. The freshman, who has already qualified in the high jump, just missed a shot at also going for a national title in the triple jump. He placed fourth Friday at 46-6.75, only 2.25 inches away from the ‘B’ standard.
Van Love-Scott (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Education) was also in the triple jump field, taking 13th at 39-7, while Dejon Shaw (Fr., Highland Park, Mich., Mechanical Engineering) was ninth in the 100-meter dash in 11.19 seconds.
Rosemary Bailey (Jr., Fayetteville, Ark., Communications) was the lone female, running the 5,000-meter run at the North Central (Ill.) Dr. Keeler Invitational on Thursday. Also a national qualifier (in the half marathon), Bailey was looking to, at the very least, break the school record. Unfortunately, her attempt failed, crossing the line in 40th place in a time of 20:01.78.
Next: McCastle, Bailey, Alex Edwards (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Secondary Education) in the 800-meter run, Sam Taylor (Jr., Eddyville, Iowa, Industrial Technology) in the 110-meter hurdles, and Derek Seddon (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) in the discus will represent WPU at the NAIA National Championships from May 22-24 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala.
