Focused Dutch earn road win in women’s tennis
INDIANOLA — A business-like approach spelled success for the Central College women’s tennis team in its 8-1 defeat over Iowa Conference rival Simpson College.
The Dutch entered the day knowing that another conference win would solidify their position for the six-team league tournament in the spring. The team went out early and made sure it reached that goal.
“It was a very solid day,” said coach Ryun Ferrell. “The team was very focused from the start.”
That focused start included a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match. Juniors Angie Allgood (Muscatine) and Megan Davis (Littleton, Colo, Valor Christian HS), continued their hot streak by winning 8-1, their third consecutive victory. The duo moves to 5-1 on the season. The No. 2 doubles pair of Ashlyn Huegel (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) and Morgan Ernst (sophomore, Pella) also won by a wide margin of 8-2, making them 4-2 on the season.
The Dutch continued their success in singles. Allgood moved to 5-1 at No. 1, winning 6-1, 6-0. Katie Todd (junior, Cedar Falls) and Sarah Montgomery (senior, Bettendorf) won at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores.
Though the victory for the Dutch was crucial to their postseason future, the conference season is far from over. Central will play the four remaining conference matches in a four-day span, starting Saturday when the team travels to Waverly to play Wartburg at 9 a.m. They will continue on to Decorah for a 3:30 p.m. match against Luther.
