Floren Schulz

Oskaloosa. Floren Mariece Knox Cranston Schulz, 99, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was born December 18, 1911 near Delta, Iowa, the daughter of George and Stella Hilderbrand Knox. She attended Newkirk Rural School and graduated from Delta High School with the class of 1929. She earned her B.A. Degree from William Penn College in 1963.

On May 17, 1942, she was united in marriage to Cecil Cranston at Delta, Iowa, and Cecil passed away on February 3, 1965. On December 27, 1975, she was united in marriage to Fred Shultz in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Fred passed away September 12, 1993. Her family includes her step daughter: Viola Mae “Pat” (& Jim) West of Hudson, Wisconsin, and her son: Jerry (& Cookie) Cranston of Johnston, Iowa. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Mike and Randy West, Lynn West Brunckhorst, Andy Roth, and Carrie Cranston Stephens; seven great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family is deeply grateful for her loving caregivers including Sandra Parker, the Augustine family, the Maple Ridge family and many others.

Floren was an educator by profession and taught school for 31 years, 16 years teaching in rural schools in Keokuk and Mahaska counties and 15 years as a fourth grade teacher at Whittier Elementary in Oskaloosa. She retired in 1975.

She was a very active member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa where she taught Sunday School and was a member of Lydia’s Circle. She was a member of PEO Chapter X, Teachers IRSPA (national, state, and local), Delta Kappa Gamma RHO Chapter, Women’s Club, and the Widow Support Group. She enjoyed stitching, dancing, nature, children, and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her two husbands, Floren was preceded in death by her parents (George and Stella Knox); two brothers: Clair and James Knox; an infant grandson: Cecil Cranston; and two nieces: Donna Filkin and Susanne Stanley; and a nephew: David Knox.

Visitation will begin Monday, August 1, 2011, after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel Monday evening from 6—8 to greet friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Andrea Brownlee officiating. A procession will form at the First Christian Church at 12:30 on Tuesday for those wishing to attend the committal service at Garrett Cemetery near Delta.
