Flag Day Ceremony Before Band Concert

Prior to Thursday night’s city band concert, everyone is welcome to attend a Flag Day Ceremony at 7:30 pm in commemoration of Flag Day (the following day). Oskaloosa Elks Lodge #340, along with Scout Troops #71 and #77 will present the history of Flag Day and how the American flag has changed as our country progressed. The Oskaloosa City Band will provide patriotic music for the ceremony.

The City Band concert will begin at 8 PM as usual. This week, the band welcomes soloist Allison McGuire to the bandstand for two numbers: “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “Moon River”. Additional musical selections often include marches, overtures, movie/musical themes, along with an occasional pop tune.

This year’s band is comprised of approximately 50 members ranging in age from teens to octogenarians. These experienced musicians practice each Monday evening in preparation for Thursday concerts throughout the summer. Oskaloosa has continuously supported a municipal band since 1864, which is now tied for the longest consecutively playing band west of the Mississippi River.

Complimentary popcorn and drinks are provided each week by TruBank and Hawkeye Real Estate. In addition, the SnoBiz trailer will be on location and open for business. Lawn games are provided courtesy of Mahaska Drug. Families and children of all ages are encouraged to attend and be a part of one of Oskaloosa’s long-standing summer events.
