The American Legion of Iowa is sponsoring a Fifth Grade Flag Essay Contest to help foster a deeper knowledge of and appreciation for the symbol of our country. The contest is open to all fifth grade students and the top three essay writers in the state will be awarded $500, $300 and $200 respectively.

Essays are due to the Harry L. Anderson Post of the American Legion in Oskaloosa no later than Nov. 15 so that a local winner may be selected to advance to the state level. The state prize winners will be announced at the Department Convention, with the winners invited to read their essays.

Essays are limited to no more than 300 words, double-spaced on one page. For more information on contest rules or to obtain an application, contact Harry L. Anderson Post 34 or visit the American Legion of Iowa’s website (www.ialegion.org).
