The flag flying over the bandstand during the month of February is in honor of Galen Dennis Veldhuizen.

Galen enlisted in the U.S. Air Force January 1969. He was trained as an airplane engine mechanic and traveled the United States and the world serving his country. Early on, he was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, SD and then served a tour in Vietnam. He was also stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan and Leipheim Air Base in Germany. Over the 23 ½ years of his career he served at Barksdale Air Force Base, Shreveport, LA, Wurtsmith Air Force Base Michigan, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Goldsboro, NC and finally retired from Grissom Air Force Base Indianapolis, IN. Galen was an expert in maintenance of aircrafts and his specialty was in the KC-10 an aircraft used for transport and aerial refueling. After his retirement in 1992, the family settled in Goldsboro, NC. While living there, he was recruited by Lockheed Martin as a Field Service Representative, trouble-shooting engine problems and implementing solutions. He went on to work for Boeing and then FedEx in the same capacity.
