Many dogs and cats got to meet some humans during Saturday’s adoption event at Penn Central Mall.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Inside Penn Central Mall on Saturday, dogs and cats from area animal shelters wagged their tails, licked people’s faces, and put on their best behavior in hopes of finding a new home.

Terry Gott, Animal Control Officer and Assistant Director of Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter in Oskaloosa, was on hand to assist future pet owners with questions and concerns.

Dogs of all ages and breeds, as well as cats and kittens, were there. “We’ve got Pitbull crosses. We’ve got a couple of Lab mixes. We have some coon hounds,” said Gott with a chuckle. “We have a little Jack Russell terrier mix here too. We have four cats, which, believe it or not, is all the cats we have available at our shelter. We’re doing really good on adoptions. We have four cats that are under a year old if you would like to come on up and check them out.

The address for Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter is 1716 Pella Avenue, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

As far as adoptions on Saturday, Gott said, “We haven’t adopted anybody out yet, but we are getting a lot of applications. I know that Heartland Humane Society just had one of their senior dogs adopted, which is pretty rare at any shelter. Senior dogs [are] pretty hard to adopt out because nobody wants an old dog, but they just walked one up the ramp and away he went.”

When it comes to those senior dogs, Gott explained, “Many of them are already set in their ways. They’re house trained, they’re nice dogs. People just don’t want to have to face the fact that maybe three or four years down the road, they are going to have to make a decision and put the dog down for medical reasons or just because they’re getting old.”
