Evans, Guimaraes Shine at Heart Preview

Ozark, Mo. — The Heart of America Athletic Conference women’s golf tournament will take place at Osage National Golf Course towards the end of the spring semester. However, the conference teams got to hit the course on Monday and Tuesday to check it before the fall season comes to a close. Despite not being able to field a full team for the event, the two players the Statesmen sent to compete had great results as Brittany Evans (Sr., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) won the individual medal and Alexis Guimaraes (Sr., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology) came in fourth.

Six schools were present at the event and 20 golfers battled it out over 36 holes. Osage National is made up of three nine-hole courses that all play differently. The Heart Conference will use the Links course as the front-nine for the conference tournament, with the River course selected as the back-nine. Baker University ended up winning the team event with a score of 719 over two days.

Evans had the lowest individual score at the end of the two-day event. She had the best score of day one with a 78, which was six over par and 10 shots clear of the next competitor. She improved by two shots on day two to finish with a 76 and a grand total of 154. She finished the tournament with 22 pars and two birdies. She also was a combined two over on the front nine holes for the tournament. Despite Karli Kerrigan of Grand View beating her day two score by three shots, Evans still finished seven shots clear of the Viking to win her second event of the year.

Guimaraes had a good event overall and just missed out on the last step of the podium. She had the third best score of day one with an 87. She also improved on the second day, as she lowered her stroke count by three, coming home with an 84. That score tied her for the third lowest round again and gave her a combined total of 171, landing her fourth out of the field of 20. She had two birdies and 15 pars over the duration of the tournament.

Up Next: The long winter awaits as the team will not be back in action until 2020, with the schedule to be announced as spring gets closer.
