Eugene R. DeWitt, 65, of Oskaloosa died Monday, June 23, 2014 at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. He was born on Thursday, September 9, 1948 in Mahaska County, the son of Cecil and Mabel DeMoney DeWitt.

Following high school, Eugene attended culinary school to become a baker. He later worked as a baker at Jaarsma’s Bakery in Pella, Bonton Bakery in Oskaloosa, and in several other places across the U.S., including Des Moines, Milwaukee, South Carolina and lastly in Hayworth, Wisconsin, until his retirement.

Eugene loved motorcycles and cars, especially Honda Goldwings. He also loved to travel, especially to Las Vegas. He was a member of the Jubilee Family Church in Oskaloosa.

His family includes three sisters: Linda Berry of Atlanta, Georgia, Joyce (& Marc) Pierson of Oskaloosa, and Mary (& Denny) Clair of Oskaloosa; two brothers: David DeWitt of North Fork, Nebraska and Jim DeWitt of Oskaloosa; nieces and nephews: Jessie and Nikki Clair, Robert and Doug Pierson, and Ashley and Mandy DeWitt; three great nieces: Molly Clair and Heavenly Faith and Jasmine; a great nephew: Miles; and his adopted grandkids: Jenny May, Kaitlyn, Peyton, Chelsea, Kiera, Gage, Kaedon, Morgan and Ian.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Jerry and Larry DeWitt.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Bill Tvedt officiating.
As was his wish, Eugene’s body has been cremated.
Visitation will begin in the Bates Funeral Chapel Wednesday after 9 A.M. and the family will be present at the funeral chapel from 9 A.M. until service time at 10:30 A.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.
