Ernest E. Evans, 92, of rural Eldon, died Sunday, August 19, 2018, at Keokuk County Health Center while in Hospice care. He was born March 14, 1926, in Farson, Iowa, the son of Eddie Evans and Mildred Derby Evans.

Ernest attended Cottonwood Country School near Farson.

On September 3, 1950, he was united in marriage to Donna J. McDaniel at the Baptist Temple in Ottumwa.

Early on Ernest worked on the family farm. He continued to farm throughout his working life. He was also a foreman and machinist for 22 years at various business places including Long Air Dox in Ottumwa, Dexter in Fairfield, Chain & Cable in Fairfield, Riverside in Ottumwa, Universal Rundle in Ottumwa, Pinkerton guard, Rockwell, Iowa Malleable Iron Co., First Miss Fertilizer in Batavia and Dexter. He also sold Crow’s seed corn, Archer Oil and worked part time for several farmers including Russell Davis and Kim Ostrander.

Ernest enjoyed doing machine work in his shop at home in retirement. In his “spare” time he enjoyed John Deere tractors, restoring antique tractors and gas engines, Midwest Old Threshers at Mt. Pleasant, collecting guns, working with metal lathe and building things. He had a love for animals, camping, picnics and planting trees.

Ernest was a Veteran of World War II, proud to have served his country and to make it home. He was a member of the Hedrick American Legion and Poppin Johnnies Two Cylinder Club.

His family includes his daughter Carol (& Jim) Rose of Hedrick; a son Kent (& Kay) Evans of Richland; 7 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; and one brother Junior Evans of Eddyville.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna; 3 brothers: Everett, Gene and Charles Evans; and his faithful dog Buddy.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Reverend Bill Hornback officiating.
Burial will be in the Competine Cemetery, near Farson, Iowa. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel prior to the service to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Heartland Humane Society in Ottumwa.
