Edgewood College Defeats Grinnell in Tight Match, 1-0
Verona, Wis. — October 6, 2024
On a brisk Sunday afternoon at Reddan Park, Edgewood College’s women’s soccer team emerged victorious against Grinnell College with a narrow 1-0 win. The game, marked by defensive intensity and low-scoring opportunities, came down to a single moment of brilliance in the second half.
After a scoreless first half, where Edgewood outshot Grinnell 5-0, the Eagles found the breakthrough in the 69th minute. Riley Haertle netted her first goal of the season for Edgewood, assisted by Emma Miller, giving the Eagles the only goal they needed to secure the win. The Eagles continued to apply pressure, finishing the match with nine shots, seven of which were on target, compared to Grinnell’s single shot on goal.
Edgewood’s defense, led by goalkeeper Hailey Corcoran, held firm throughout the match, with Corcoran needing to make only one save to preserve the shutout. Grinnell goalkeeper Grayson Allison was more active, recording six saves in an admirable effort to keep her team in the game.
Both teams played physically, with a combined total of 17 fouls, including a yellow card issued to Edgewood’s Stephanie Kalscheuer in the 74th minute.
Grinnell’s struggles to create chances were evident, as the Pioneers could not capitalize on their four corner kicks and managed just one shot throughout the game. Despite a strong defensive showing, their offense couldn’t find the spark needed to equalize.
The win pushes Edgewood College to 8-3-1 for the season, while Grinnell falls to 5-4-1.
