Dutch women shut out on the road in soccer

INDIANOLA — Firing off 20 shot attempts did not yield the Central College women’s soccer team a goal in a 1-0 loss against Simpson College Wednesday night.

The Dutch (5-8-1, 0-5-1 American Rivers Conference) outshot the Storm (9-2-5, 3-1-2 conference) by a 20-13 margin, but only three of Central’s shots were on frame compared to seven for Simpson.

“Our offense did a good job of getting opportunities,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “It’s just a matter of us having that clinical piece in the final third of the field. It’s great that we are getting shots but we need to tuck some away.”

Midfielder Anna Tillo (West Burlington, Notre Dame HS) led Central with five shot attempts and forward Erin Manion (senior, Delafield, Wis., Kttle Moraine HS) had four.

“I thought it was a good game for Anna,” Kobylinski said. “She’s been a loyal servant of the program this year. She got a chance today and did well in the attack combining with Erin.”

Returning to the starting lineup as the goalkeeper, Taylor Golt (junior, Crystal Lake, Ill., Prairie Ridge HS) made a season-high six saves.

“Taylor stepped up really well,” Kobylinski said. “I was really happy to see what I saw from her.”

Kobylinski was pleased with the performances of several other players as well.

“Jacie Borman (freshman, Eagan, Minn.) played well on the flank,” Kobylinski said. “Bridget Lynch (freshman, Northglenn, Colo., Jefferson Academy) did outstanding at center mid and center back. Alyssa Knuth (freshman, St. Joseph, Mich.) was a different maker at right back and Elise Askelsen (senior, midfielder, Indianola) had a great game in her home town.”

Making the trip to Cedar Rapids, Central will battle Coe College (7-6-2, 2-3-1 conference) Saturday night at 6 p.m.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” Kobylinski said. “Tonight was an even match and it will probably be the same against Coe.”
